What Does a Holistic Approach to Therapy Actually Mean?

If you've spent any time looking for a therapist, you've probably encountered the word "holistic." But what does a holistic approach to therapy actually mean?

At its heart, holistic therapy recognizes something simple but important: you are more than a diagnosis or a collection of symptoms.

Your mental and emotional well-being can be influenced by your experiences, relationships, physical health, environment, identity, stress, responsibilities, and the many other pieces that make up your life. A holistic approach makes room for the whole picture.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Symptoms matter. Anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, chronic stress, and other concerns can have a significant impact on everyday life. But focusing only on reducing a symptom may not tell us everything about what you're experiencing.

For example, feeling overwhelmed might be connected to stress at work, caregiving responsibilities, a major life transition, relationship difficulties, physical health concerns, past experiences, or several things happening at once.

Holistic therapy creates space to explore those connections.

Instead of asking only, "How do we make this symptom go away?" we can also consider, "What is happening in your life, and what do you need to feel more supported?"

Holistic Doesn't Mean One-Size-Fits-All

In fact, it's quite the opposite.

Two people can come to therapy with similar concerns and need very different kinds of support. Your experiences, personality, strengths, preferences, culture, relationships, and goals all matter.

That's why treatment at Silver Lake Counseling is individualized. We work with you to create a treatment plan based on what you're experiencing and what you hope to gain from therapy.

There isn't one predetermined path everyone is expected to follow.

Evidence-Based and Holistic Can Work Together

Sometimes people hear "holistic" and assume it means stepping away from established therapeutic practices. That's not how we view it.

At Silver Lake Counseling, holistic care can be integrated with evidence-based therapeutic approaches. Depending on your individual needs and treatment plan, therapy may incorporate approaches such as EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), expressive arts, person-centered therapy, and other approaches offered within our practice.

The goal isn't to fit you into a particular therapy method. It's to thoughtfully draw from appropriate approaches to support your goals.

Your Life Outside the Therapy Room Matters

Therapy doesn't happen in isolation.

Sleep, stress, relationships, work, family responsibilities, physical health, major transitions, grief, identity, and the ways you spend your time can all influence how you feel.

A holistic perspective gives those parts of your life room in the conversation when they're relevant to you.

It also recognizes your strengths. Therapy isn't only about identifying what's difficult. It can help you better understand what already supports you, what brings meaning to your life, and what helps you feel more grounded and connected.

You Have a Voice in Your Care

A holistic approach is also collaborative.

You are the person living your life every day, which means your perspective matters. Therapy should be something we do with you, not something that is simply done to you.

You can ask questions. You can talk about what feels helpful and what doesn't. Your goals can evolve. Your treatment can evolve with them.

That collaboration helps create care that feels personal rather than prescribed.

What Might Holistic Therapy Look Like?

There isn't one specific formula.

For one person, therapy might focus on understanding anxiety and developing new coping strategies. For another, it may involve processing trauma with EMDR. Someone else may be navigating grief, chronic illness, relationships, identity, a major life transition, or patterns they've carried for years.

The tools may differ because the people do.

What remains consistent is the belief that meaningful care begins by seeing and listening to the whole person.
